The festival Budapest 100 opens its doors this weekend

Extraordinary buildings open their doors to the visitor this weekend in the Hungarian capital, thanks to the festival Budapest 100. This event aims to keep alive the history of the Hungarian architecture and at the same time it shares the common values of the city’s inhabitants and bring people together from different backgrounds. The programs of this year are dedicated to the centenary of the Bauhaus school.

This is a perfect occasion for architecture lovers and people who are interested in discovering the magnificent buildings and the stories behind them. The selected buildings are open to everyone, the programs are free of charge, however some require pre-booking.

Budapest 100 will start its program with an exhibition of the house located in Attila street 119, Kristina borough on the Buda side. Visitors can learn about the history of the house built in 1932 and can have breakfast with the tenants from 10 am. Both on Saturday and Sunday programs start at 9 am and finish late afternoon.

Another famous building built in the style of Bauhaus is the Palatinus Strandfürdő (Spa) constructed in 1937. It is well known for its pool that is 140 meters long and it was the biggest in Europe at its time of construction. The spa is located on the beautiful Margaret Island and it was reconstructed in 2017. Guided tours start from 10 am, 12 noon, 5 pm and 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday and here previous registration is needed.

Budapest has numerous Bauhaus buildings around the city both on the Buda and the Pest side, from which many are residential buildings for example the family house based in Fodor street 40. The house opens its doors only on Saturday at 10 am, when visitors can enjoy a presentation and see the plans, documents and photographs of the building. After the indoor exhibition one can walk around the house and take a look from the garden.

For those who want to enjoy the weekend with their kids, there are houses that offer some specific programs such as the mansion-palace finished in 1934 situated in Hollósy Simon street 12, in the Orbánhegy neighbourhood. The show here as well starts at 10 am and it will be open during the whole weekend with outdoor programs for the little ones.

The festival Budapest 100 was launched in 2011, through the years it received over 154 thousand visitors, opened the doors of 655 buildings and won three international awards Lebendige Stadt Stiftung (2013), SozialMarie (2017), URBACT Good practice award (2017).
